  What is happening next week in kindergarten?

***SIX FLAGS READ TO SUCCEED

We are participating in the Six Flags Read To Succeed program.  This is optional for our learners, but a great way to earn a FREE six flags ticket!!  Each student needs to read (or be read to) for 6 hours.  A log came home this week for you to fill out as you read.  All logs are due by February 23rd.  Tickets will be handed out in the late spring.  This is always a favorite for our learners!!!  It's such an easy way for them to work towards a goal and have a great reward at the end!!  Have fun!!  

***100th day of School Activity

On February 5th, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school.  We will be completing all sorts of fun activities on that day.  Please send a labeled zip lock bag with 100 items to help celebrate our 100th day at school.  Please bring your collection on February 2nd.  Some examples of things to bring would be 100 paperclips, 100 stickers, 100 pennies, etc..the possibilities are endless!

Next week.....
Language Arts
We are working on our middle of the year writing assessment.  We can't believe how far they have come with their writing!  We are so PROUD of all of their hard work!!!  

Our two new wall words will be "of" and "that".

When reading at home, don't forget to have your child retell the story and ask some questions about the book to make sure they have good comprehension of what they read. 

Social Studies
As we begin our famous American unit, we are talking about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the effect he left on our world.  

Math 

Learners will make connections between income and ways to fulfill wants and needs.  They will also begin considering simple skills required for jobs.

Home Activity - Ask your child what job he or she might like to do when he or she grows up.  Discuss the tools and skills that are needed for that job.  


Reflex Math Each learner came home with his/her log in information for Reflex Math.  This is a program designed to increase fact fluency. We will be practicing how to use this app in class but it can also be accessed at home through the app or website.  This is NOT mandatory for kindergartners to do at home as addition and subtraction are not officially introduced until the end of the school year. 



Science: 
Learners will continue to discuss that earth materials including rocks, water, and soil can be observed, described and sorted based upon physical properties.  Learners will know that earth materials have properties and patterns.  (such as - size, shape, color, and texture)

The chilly weather is upon us.  Please make sure that you send your child with a winter coat, gloves, and a hat each day.  We will go outside for recess if the wind chill temperature is above 32 degrees!  We love fresh air!! 

The flu bug has hit kindergarten!  If your child comes down with any symptoms, please make sure that they are fever free for AT LEAST 24 hours before they return to school.  Thanks so much!

  What is happening next week in kindergarten?

****A note from PE:  

All students must wear tennis shoes on gym days.  With the weather turning colder, many students are wearing boots.  Boots are not permitted in the gym because of the traction on the floor.  Anyone now wearing tennis shoes on PE days will not be allowed to participate for the day. This will ensure the safety of all learners.  Thanks so much!!

Next week.....
Language Arts
All classes have been busy at work using Seesaw to upload their daily writing journals.  Also, all classes are using Learning A - Z (Raz-Kids) learning app to read leveled books.  Please make sure to check our your child's seesaw account and to load this new app to your smart device so you can utilize these books at home.  Thanks so much!!

Our two new wall words next week will be:  "they" and "you".  We are up to 24 words!!

Social Studies


Math 

Learners will continue to compare and identify U.S. coins, recognizing that each is different.  We will also start our Financial Literacy Unit where we will learn difference between earning money and receiving money as a gift and that we use money we earn to pay for items.      

Home Activity - Talk about ways your child could earn money as income such as doing chores around the home or for neighbors.  Please also show your child a set of coins including a penny, nickel, dime, and a quarter.  Have him or her tell you the name of each coin and describe how the coins are alike and how they are different.  Thank you for your help!

Math

Next week.....
Language Arts
Our two new word wall words will be "for" and "my".  In our daily writing journals we will begin to use a journal checksheet to ensure that we are using capital letters to start a sentence, finger spaces, and periods at the end of a sentence.  The learners use the checksheet to make sure that they included all 3 in their writing.  We will also be working on word families (writing and reading them)  for the next few weeks.

"Book in a Bag" and library books will go home on Monday.  Please make sure to return them at the end of the week.  Thank you!

Social Studies
We will talk about winter and how it affects people, animals, and our world.  

Math 

Our new math unit is money.  Learners will be expected to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters by size and details. Kindergartners will be exposed to the values of the coins and counting the value of a set of coins but are not expected to do this independently until first grade. 

Reflex Math: Each learner will be coming home with his/her log in information for Reflex Math.  This is a program designed to increase fact fluency. Science: 
We will be exploring the properties of rocks and soil.All students are encouraged to find a rock from nature and bring it in to class so we can sort them.  Please make sure the rock is one that your child is willing to share with the class and can fit in your child's hand.
