Open House
Mark you calendars for Thursday, March 8th from 5:30 - 7:00!  TCE is having an Open House!!!  Kindergarten has been working very hard to get things ready to show you.  We can't wait to share our learning with our families!!  Hope to see you all there!!

Next week.....
Language Arts
We are writing about what we have learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We can't wait to show you at Open House!!!

We are also working on reading with fluency and expression.

Social Studies
Next week we will concentrate on Abraham Lincoln and his contributions to our country.

Math 
Learners will continue to sort, describe and identify solid shapes based on characteristics of the shapes.  Learners will solve problems using logical reasoning.

Home Activity for math -  Have your child identify and describe household objects that are shaped like a sphere, cone, cylinder and cube.  

Science: 
Learners will continue to  study about the life cycle of a plant: Learners will observe how seeds change and what changes does a plant undergo throughout its life cycle.

Home Activity for Science - Your child will be coming home with a seed in a zip lock bag.  We would like your child to observe the stages of the seed at home.  We will also be doing the same activity at school.  Please keep the paper towel in the zip lock bag damp but not dripping.  Tape the open zip lock bag to a sunny window and watch the magic happen.  We will be sending home a paper where the learners can record their observations.  If they bring the paper back completed,  they will receive a Texan buck.  Woo Hoo!

Learners will be review the 30 sight words that we have learned this year.  Look for the 30 word assessment to come home next week.  Please help with any words that have not been memorized.  Thank you!!

Home Activity for math -  Give your child a hundreds chart and say number riddles.  For example, Riddle 1 - I am greater than 40.  I am less than 42.  What number am I?  Riddle 2 You say my number when you count by tens.  I am greater than 50.  I am less than 70.  What number am I?  
Have your child circle the number on the chart.  Ask your child what is one more or one less than the number you circled.  :-) 

Science: 
Learners will study about the life cycle of a plant: Learners will observe how seeds change and what changes does a plant undergo throughout its life cycle.

Next week.....
Language Arts
We will review the 30 sight words that we have learned so far.  We will also continue to work on writing quality sentences in our journal.  During reading, we will concentrate on author's purpose and being able to talk about why the author chose to write a particular book.  We will also talk about connections we can make to the books that we read.

Social Studies
We will continue our study of famous Americans by learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Math 
Learners will continue to sort and identify 2D  shapes based on characteristics of the shapes.  Learners will demonstrate how shapes can be joined to create other shapes. 

Home Activity for math - Have your child join shapes to form a larger shape, and then tell you about the shape.  

Reflex Math Each learner came home with his/her log in information for Reflex Math.  This is a program designed to increase fact fluency. We will be practicing how to use this app in class but it can also be accessed at home through the app or website.  This is NOT mandatory for kindergartners to do at home as addition and subtraction are not officially introduced until the end of the school year. 


Science: 
Learners will continue to use critical thinking and problem solving to sort plants and identify parts of plants including the plant life cycle. Kinder will be visiting the TCE garden to observe the plants and identify the parts of the plant.

The chilly weather is upon us.  Please make sure that you send your child with a winter coat, gloves, and a hat each day.  We will go outside for recess if the wind chill temperature is above 32 degrees!  We love fresh air!!

  What is happening next week in kindergarten?

***SIX FLAGS READ TO SUCCEED

We are participating in the Six Flags Read To Succeed program.  This is optional for our learners, but a great way to earn a FREE six flags ticket!!  Each student needs to read (or be read to) for 6 hours.  A log came home this week for you to fill out as you read.  All logs are due by February 23rd.  Tickets will be handed out in the late spring.  This is always a favorite for our learners!!!  It's such an easy way for them to work towards a goal and have a great reward at the end!!  Have fun!!  

***100th day of School Activity

On February 5th, we will be celebrating our 100th day of school.  We will be completing all sorts of fun activities on that day.  Please send a labeled zip lock bag with 100 items to help celebrate our 100th day at school.  Please bring your collection on February 2nd.  Some examples of things to bring would be 100 paperclips, 100 stickers, 100 pennies, etc..the possibilities are endless!

Language Arts
Our two new wall words will be "do" and "here".  This will give us 30 words total!  

In writing we are learning how to extend our sentences to be  more than just a few words in length. :-) 

Social Studies
We will celebrate our 100th day of school on Monday with some fun activities!  We will also continue our Famous American study by talking about Ruby Bridges. 

Math 

Learners will sort shapes based on characteristics of the shapes.  Learners will also identify shapes based on their characteristics, as well as describe characteristics of a specific shapes.
