Calendar Dates

Please note Muffins for Mom will be May 11th (7:45 - 8:45am).  We are hoping to see all moms at this special event.  Please let your teacher know if you will not be able to attend.
An invitation from your child will come home today in the green folder.

Next week.....

Language Arts

We will continue assessing sight words, reading levels, letter/sounds, and writing.
Don't forget to use the learning A-Z app at home!  This is a great way to have your child read on their level.  If you need help on how to get it on your computer or Ipad, just let your language arts teacher know!

Social Studies

We will be talking about THE most important people - MOMS!!!  We can't wait to celebrate you at Muffins for Mom on May 11th.

Math  

Learners will solve word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and differences within 10.

Math Home Activity
Please continue to tell your child a short addition word problem and a subtraction word problem.  Have him or her use objects to act out the word problems.

Science: 

Learners will be visiting the school garden this week to observe how plants and animals depend on each other to survive.

Next week.....

Language Arts

We will begin our end of year assessments next week in Language Arts.  The end of year assessments include recognition of sight words, writing assessment, and reading level assessment.  These end of year levels will help each individual start off first grade right where he/she left off!

Social Studies

We will celebrate Earth Day by discovering all of the wonderful things the earth provides for us.  We will also talk about things we can do to help protect the earth.

Math  

 Learners will continue to  use objects and pictures to solve problems that involve joining and separating.  Learners will use words, pictures, and numbers to explain how they solved the problem and justify their answer.

Field Trip

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers at our field trip!  We had an amazing day and we couldn't have done it without you!!

We are continuing our amazing reading concentrating on fluency, reading strategies and noticing if sentences have periods or questions marks since we read those sentences differently.

Social Studies

Next week we will being our new economics unit by discussing the differences between wants and needs. 

Math

Show your child 10 objects. Have your child break apart the set to show different ways to make 10. 

Science: 

We had a wonderful time at the zoo.  It was a great connection for the children to see some of the animals we have been learning about in class.  We will continue to discuss and research animals this week.

Field Trip

We are going on our field trip on Thursday, April 12th.  Please have your child wear their grade level shirt.  All learners must bring a sack lunch on that day. Everything must be disposable.  No lunchboxes or ice packs.  Everything will be thrown away after they eat.  Please make sure your child wears comfortable walking shoes and either a jacket if it is chilly or sunscreen if it is hot. Everyone cross your fingers that the rain stays away!!!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to chaperone our field trip!  Due to safety concerns, only parents who are chaperones (and have passed the background check) will be allowed to walk around the zoo with us. Chaperones may not bring siblings and parents who have not signed up and passed a background check will not be able to walk with us at the zoo.

Next week.....

Language Arts

Our two new wall words are "it" and "in".  We will continue to work on fluency when reading and chunking longer words into smaller chunks to read them.

We will also continue to work in our new writing journals by writing different types of sentences so that all of our sentences do not begin the same way.

Social Studies

Next week we will talk about maps and what a map can teach us.  

Math  

This week we will begin our unit on addition and subtraction.  Learner are expected to be able to model, solve, and explain their solutions for sums up to 10.

Science: 

Animals remain our focus for science this week.  We will be sorting animals based on their physical characteristics such as color, size, and body covering.
