This will be our last blog until first grade!!!  We have enjoyed sharing all of our learning with you through our weekly blog.  We hope you have an amazing summer and we can't wait to explore 1st grade together!  It's going to be great!  Don't forget to drop your teacher an e-mail over the summer so we can keep in touch!  

Last Week of School Events

Tuesday, May 29th:  GAME DAY!!!!!!  Please have your child bring 1-2 games from home to share and play (board games, twister, card games, family games, etc.)  Make sure your child knows how to play the game so that they can teach their friends.  No ipads please.  Also, please remember that ALL games will be shared so don't send in anything breakable or expensive. :-)  Label all games with your child's name. 

Wednesday, May 30th:  MOVIE DAY!!!!!  Please bring in a pillow and a SMALL blanket.  We will be enjoying a movie today.  This is also autograph day!  If your child purchased a yearbook they may bring it to school on this day to get autographs.  If your child did not purchase a yearbook we will have a little notebook for friends to sign.  Thank you! 

Thursday, May 31st:  LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!  This is an early release day.  School is finished at 12:15.  Please make note of this time so that we don't have any sad kindergartners on the last day if their ride is running late. 

Language Arts

We are finishing up our sight word book and tying up loose ends.  We can't wait for you to see their writing journals when they come home at the end of the year!  We are absolutely amazing in kindergarten!!

Math  

We will continue to work on our fact fluency up to 10.  The children are doing an amazing job.  All learners would benefit from practicing their facts at home.  :-) 

Math Home Activity

Pick a number between 1 and 20 (or between any 2 numbers up to 100). Have your child guess the number, then you tell if your number was greater than or less than his guess. Have your child keep revising his guess until he guesses your number. Then trade roles.

Science: 

Learners will be given STEM challenges for focusing on building,engineering, and design.  Learners will explore problem solving and design using creativity and scientific skills.

Don't forget to turn in the yellow sheets that lets TCE know if you will be returning next year.  They were due May 11th. 

ALL library books and "Book in a Bag" was due on Friday, May 11th.  If you still have these at home, please send them to school as soon as you can.  Everything needs to be inventoried before the year is over.  THANK YOU!!!!! 

Field Day
Field Day is Friday, May 18th (weather permitting).  Please make sure to check the green folder for IMPORTANT information/permission slips regarding field day.   They came home this week.This is our FAVORITE day of the year!!! Thank you to everyone who has already volunteered! We will send more information next week on what to wear, bring, do, etc.  

Lost and Found

Please make sure to check if your child has any items in lost and found by Wednesday, May 16th.  

The last day for the lost and found will be next Wednesday.   All items still in the lost and found will be donated by Thursday, May 17^th at lunchtime. 

Language Arts

In writing we have begun to write "Once upon a time....." stories.  We love their imagination!!  We are also finishing up our word folders with the last of the 42 words.  The rest of the year we will be be spent winding down our kindergarten curriculum and getting us ready for first grade!  We are so proud at how much all of the children have grown this year in reading and writing!  Don't forget to keep reading and writing over the summer to keep up reading/writing skills and fluency when reading.

Social Studies

We will be wrapping up social studies with some fun activities for the rest of the year.  We have loved learning about ourselves and our world this year.  In first grade we will take what we know and dig a little deeper.

Math  

We are really getting ready for first grade.  We are working on our fact fluency.  The children are doing an amazing job.  We are so impressed!  

Math Home Activity

Count 8 pennies, then hide 4.  Ask "How many are hidden?"  
Count 10 pennies, then hide 7.  Ask "How many are hidden?"  continue the game changing the amount your count and hide.  

Science: 

We will be discussing the physical characteristics of animals that help them survive.  Learners will illustrate an animal's characteristics on the outside and how it helps then on the inside.  ex.  an eagle has a talon for catching fish and protection.

Language Arts

We are getting ready for first grade!!!  The writing rubric will definitely be harder in first grade so we have begun to make the transition to include some of the first grade TEKS.  It feels great to get a head start!!
When your child is reading at home, don't forget to have them read aloud to practice fluency.  Their reading should be fluid when reading aloud. Remember, the only way to become a better reader is to practice, practice, practice!!!

Social Studies

We will be talking about THE most important people - MOMS!!!  We can't wait to celebrate you at Muffins for Mom on May 11th.

Learners will continue to practice solving  word problems using objects and drawings to find sums up to 10 and differences within 10.

Due to the rainy weather last week, we were unable to visit the garden.  This week we are hoping for sunny skies.  Learners will be visiting the school garden this week to observe how plants and animals depend on each other to survive.

Next week.....

Language Arts

We will begin our end of year assessments next week in Language Arts.  The end of year assessments include recognition of sight words, writing assessment, and reading level assessment.  These end of year levels will help each individual start off first grade right where he/she left off!

Social Studies

We will celebrate Earth Day by discovering all of the wonderful things the earth provides for us.  We will also talk about things we can do to help protect the earth.

Math  

 Learners will continue to  use objects and pictures to solve problems that involve joining and separating.  Learners will use words, pictures, and numbers to explain how they solved the problem and justify their answer.

We are continuing our amazing reading concentrating on fluency, reading strategies and noticing if sentences have periods or questions marks since we read those sentences differently.

Next week we will being our new economics unit by discussing the differences between wants and needs.

Show your child 10 objects. Have your child break apart the set to show different ways to make 10. 

Science: 

We had a wonderful time at the zoo.  It was a great connection for the children to see some of the animals we have been learning about in class.  We will continue to discuss and research animals this week.
